Police took two Russian tourists into custody in the Karangasem Regency of Bali on May 9, 2018, after they were caught unfurling the hammer and sickle flag of the former Soviet Union from a small restaurant.

During interrogation by police, the Russian couple, Denis Nazarenko (37) and his wife Katerina Evelokimova (30), said that they had asked the permission of the owner of Warung Baruna, Hildergati Teti, to display the flag of the former Soviet Union as a means of celebrating “Victory Day.”

Balipost.com reports that the two were staying in Bali at the Vila Bali Vidi in Ubud, Gianyar Regency.

Police were drawn to visit the small restaurant when pictures of the flag went viral on social media. Police interrogations were complicated by the fact that the two only spoke Russian with a sprinkling of English. The Russians insisted they were not members of a radical group and were in Bali on holiday.

The couple, who arrived in Bali on March 19, 2018, were holding a visa that had been extended until May 17, 2018.

Denis Nazarenko told the police he had come to Bali for a holiday and that he owns a restaurant in Moscow.

The two said that they celebrate “Victory Day” every May 9th to mark the entrance of Russian troops into the Germany City of Berlin at the end of World War II. The 1-meter x 1-meter Russian flag they unfurled in Karangasem has been carried all the way from Moscow.

The two Russians said they had no knowledge that the hammer and sickle symbol cannot be displayed in Indonesia.

Police in Karangasem concluded that the Russians had no ill intent in displaying the flag bearing a “radical symbol.” After accepting the couple’s apology, the two Russians were handed over to Police Headquarters in Denpasar for further disposition.
