BALI UPDATE # 064 - 03 AUGUST 1998
A MOST INTERESTING STATISTIC
Much has been said in this newsletter about how
Bali represents a safe destination for tourists and how the Balinese Culture
places a premium on harmony and safety within the community.
But, perhaps no figure speaks more eloquently to
this point than the statistic recently discovered in discussions with
the general manager of one major hotel in the Nusa Dua area of the island.
The subject hotel recorded a 222% increase in the number of children staying
at their resort in the first 7 months of 1998 as compared to 1997. The
peak occupancy for kids occurred at the end of May and June, during the
height of civil unrest in other parts of Indonesia.
Bali tourism spares no effort in telling the world
how safe our island is for visitors, but what stronger statement is there
than the simple fact that when times become difficult in other parts of
Indonesia, people entrust the safety of their wives and children to Bali
- the island of the gods.
2ND ANNUAL BALI TRAVEL
The Bali Skal Club will host the 2nd Annual Bali
Travel Industry Charity "Tropicana Beach Ball", Sept. 5, at Hard Rock
Beach Club. The tropical costume theme event features cocktails, poolside
dining and dancing in the sand under the full moon to live music of the
world's warm places.
Tickets, at US$38 each, include dinner, beer, wine,
soft drinks, live music, prizes, auction and parking. The ball organising
committee expects 350 participants and will raise funds for local charities.
Those attending will be from Skal clubs in Australia, Indonesia and Asia,
along with industry members and friends. "This is guaranteed to be the
industry event of the year," said organising committee co-chairman Michael
Cortenbach. "It promises to provide a much needed respite from the pressures
our industry has faced in Indonesia this year," he added.
Last year's event, with a 60's theme, drew 250 participants
and raised US$18,000 for local charities.
Tickets go on sale August 7. To order tickets contact
Debe Campbell at tel/fax 62-(0)361-423596 or E-mail <firstname.lastname@example.org>.
Skal is an international movement represented by
